You're correct that this does sound like the motor on your DVD player is going out and is having trouble keeping the discs moving. I do not believe that previous answer is correct. This radio does not require an amplifier for any typical use. The included instructions tell you how to connect up to four speakers which are powered to 40 watts each by the radio. Yes, you will be able to simply swap the radios out following the speaker wiring guide that is in the instructions and printed on the top of the radio.

We have a few stereo options that will work great for you but it will depend on whether you have a single DIN or double DIN stereo currently.
